Gogal Publishing Company, a supporting member of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association, today announced the launch of GPS Topo USA, a new iPhone navigation app designed specifically for outdoor enthusiasts. GPS Topo USA guides users to any wilderness destination then brings them safely back home again.

“This new app turns any iPhone or iPad into an all-in-one, automotive, and handheld GPS,” says Mike Gogal, president, Gogal Publishing Company. “We’ve incorporated both orienteering style, map-and-compass navigation with GPS automotive navigation in one integrated iOS application.”

GPS Topo USA includes detailed street maps and seamless 7.5 minute topographic maps of the entire United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. The app features a map display that scrolls as users travel, constantly displaying their current location whether driving or hiking in the wilderness. For offline use, both the topographic maps and road maps can be stored locally, eliminating any need for a cellular connection while traveling.

For wilderness navigation, the app features a built-in field compass and an integrated direction-of-travel indicator that guides users to any user-defined waypoint. During travel, the compass continuously displays the user’s current GPS coordinates, altitude and compass heading, and the indicator points the way and counts down the distance to the selected waypoint. Waypoints can easily be created, annotated and stored with just a touch of the map or they can be entered manually, which is ideal for storing geocaching destinations.

For automotive navigation, users simply create a new waypoint at their intended destination using the road map. Once the destination is specified, a simple touch of the “GO” button immediately passes that waypoint’s GPS coordinates to the iPhone or iPad’s internal navigation software to provide turn-by-turn driving navigation.

The combined features of highly detailed topographic coverage, map and compass navigation, and capacity for online and offline use make GPS Topo USA ideal for the full gamut of wilderness and outdoor recreational activities.

GPS Topo USA can be purchased directly in Apple’s App Store by searching for the title. For additional information about Gogal Publishing Company and its complete line of GPS-enabled apps, please visit gogalpublishing.com.
