The Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association is seeking a new Executive Director to replace the past director who has recently retired. This is a terrific opportunity for a communications professional who is looking for a leadership position that offers flexibility, along with the opportunity for entrepreneurship, creativity, and the chance to interact with outdoor writers across Pennsylvania and beyond.
Formed in 1950, the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association is the largest state outdoor writer organization in the country. With some 200 Active, Associate and Supporting Members, the primary reason for POWA’s existence centers around craft improvement – becoming better, more knowledgeable, more highly skilled communicators.
The mission of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association is to enhance the skills of its members, provide a strong and resounding conservation message to the public, hold its membership to the highest ethical standards and provide a legacy for future generations of outdoor communicators.
Position Description:
We are seeking a positive, organized, and effective leader who can advance POWA’s mission, grow and diversify membership, and help to guide the organization through its next phase of growth and planning. With assistance from the board, special committees, and officers, specific duties include:
- Managing interactions with the Board of Directors
- Helping to develop and implement a 3-5 year business plan
- Managing the organization’s website and social media channels
- Guiding the organization through technology changes and updates
- Organizing the annual Craft award program
- Raising funds, administering grants, working with donors and sponsors
- Identifying opportunities and finding ways to grow membership
- Organizing annual conference and other events
- Processing and vetting applications for membership, including Active, Associate, Apprentice, Student and Supporting members.
- Managing internal and external communications, such as the PowWow newsletter
- Organizing annual membership campaigns and other special events
- Maintaining records pertaining to bylaws, duties, history, and membership
- Overseeing annual elections
- Maintaining the organization’s budget and financial records.
Qualifications:
We are looking for energetic candidates with non-profit leadership experience and a background in membership development and fundraising. Prior communications experience, especially related to the outdoors, is desired. There are no specific education requirements.
Hours and Compensation:
This is a half-time salaried position with the opportunity for a great deal of flexibility. During busy times, commitment will be 20-25 hours per week, but at other times, duties might require as little as five hours per week. The position is a good match for someone who is semi-retired or an active professional who is looking for part-time remote work.
Location:
This is a remote, work-from-home position. Pennsylvania candidates are highly preferred, but candidates from neighboring states will be considered. Some travel is expected, including site visits for and attendance at the POWA Spring Conference.
Deadline:
Please submit application materials by Aug. 31, 2025.
